Spring Outings With Family in Elder Care

lilacs2Spring is here! Of course, here in the Pacific NW that often means we will see more rain than sun, but the bright daffodils and tulips help brighten the days. As the weather warms up, it’s a great time to send away the winter’s torpor and get out into Nature. If you have family or friends in elder care, such as an adult family home or assisted living facility, remember that they may enjoy an outing even more than you!

If you do take an friend or relative in elder care out on a day trip, here are a few tips to help the day go smoothly.

  • Plan ahead. How far in advance do you need to notify the facility? Remember that your loved one may have doctor visits, hair appointments, or other scheduled events, so try and plan around their normal routine.
  • Check with the policies of the care facility. Who can authorize an outing? How does check-in/check-out work?
  • Bring along any meds the person may need while you are out. Also, if your loved one is on a special diet, ask the facility if a box lunch may be prepared for you to take along.
  • Plan your transportation. If you need to make room for a walker or wheelchair, plan ahead so you have the right vehicle to fit the family members and their gear.
  • Timing is everything! Allow extra time for unexpected delays, and make sure the trip isn’t too long for your loved one’s comfort.
  • Have Fun! Take pictures, make memories, and share stories from your lifetime together.

It may not always be realistic to bring your elders on frequent adventures, but if you are able to make occasional outings part of your experience together, everyone will be the better for it!

Nancy was so compassionate

I can’t even begin to tell you how wonderful it has been having Nancy help us find a place for my Mom who has dementia. Nancy was so incredible and helpful especially at a time when we were, as can be imagined, having one of the most difficult family events ever. Nancy was so compassionate more »

Thank you so much

Hi Nancy, I want to thank you on behalf of my brothers and I for helping us find a place for our mother. I was at a loss as to how to go about things until I got hold of you. I’m sure we would still be looking had it not been for your help. more »

Positive spin on the transition.

Talked to mom today and heard no regrets (after her move to assisted living). I give you a lot of the credit… you really helped to put a positive spin on the whole transition.

A mere thanks hardly covers it

Picking me up, handling the walker every time, generally bolstering me mentally; a mere thanks hardly covers it all!

Good fit to Mothers needs

Thanks Nancy for responding so quickly to my plea for help. I couldn’t have done it without you. Finding a home for my mother so quickly and a good fit to her needs. I now know I would have made a critical mistake if I had done this on my own. Your guidance in knowing more »

Good care of my Dad

I can’t thank you enough for recommending the house my Dad is living in. Joyce and Sandy are great, along with the other gals. They take such good care of my Dad and I think he really is enjoying living there. It has been a great move for him.

Wonderful to work with

Hi Nancy! This is a hello and thank-you from Duane B’s family. You miraculously found him an assisted living place right after Christmas 2011. He was 96 at the time and in a “spend down” period. You found him a wonderful place in Kirkland. Anyway, I was trying to find something else in my e-mails more »
